  Work Progress at Herrenchiemsee Palace – Salle des Gardes

In October 1879, the “Die malerische Ausschmückung” of the room began¹. In March 1882, individual overdoor paintings were commissioned for specific artists²; designs for them were still being created at the beginning of 1883³, so they were probably completed toward the end of 1883. In March 1882, scaffolding was also erected so that the artists could begin work on the paintings⁴.

In April 1882, stucco workers began polishing the marble⁵, and the work was completed in July 1882⁶. In March 1882, it was also commissioned that ten wall chandeliers be installed⁷. The ceiling painting began in June 1881 and was completed sometime in 1882; it was painted by Widnmann⁸.

In August 1882, Perron completed two models for halberds⁹, so their production may have begun around this time and been finished sometime in 1883. Today, the halberds are placed by the wall with the doors, but during the king’s lifetime they stood along the walls between the windows.(fig.1)

At the end of March 1883, a supply contract was signed with the firm Lobmeyr for chandeliers for the Grand Appartement¹⁰, including one for the Salle des Gardes, so it was likely delivered around that time. In 1883, Perron completed the busts of French marshals¹¹, and they appear in Georg Dollmann’s description of the castle from June 1883¹²; however, the description also notes that the busts of Marshals Villars and Vauban had not yet been delivered by June 1883, though they were probably delivered during the king’s stay in 1883. The busts of the Great Condé and Marshal Turenne, however, had already been delivered to the castle by June 1883.

During the king’s lifetime, two marble figural groups were also placed next to the clock on the fireplace(fig.2): Mercury on Pegasus(fig.3) and Fame on Pegasus(fig.4). These were based on sculptures originally located in the gardens of the Château de Marly; during the king’s lifetime, they stood at the entrance to the Tuileries Gardens and are now in the Louvre¹³. The figural groups were commissioned from Perron in October 1882¹⁴ and were therefore probably delivered in 1883 as well. Their present whereabouts are unknown.

In 1883, benches made by Anton Pössenbacher¹⁵ were delivered. The conclusion, therefore, is that the king most likely saw the room completed and furnished during his stay from September 30 to October 8, 1883¹⁶.

 „[...] Endlich kann ich Ihnen benachrichtigen, daß die beiden Hellebarden fertig sind. [...] 300 frs.und Auslagen 76 frs. für Hellebarden-Versailles. Bruder Philipp wird Ihnen, was die Schäfte anlangt, das Nöthige übermittelt haben. Dieselben sind, wie gesagt, ganz einfach [...] Die verzierten Schäfte mit Tuch oder Samt überzogen und Quasten [...unleserlich...] werden im Innern der Gemächer oder bei großen Festlichkeiten gebraucht. Die Waffen selbst hatten keine gewisse Form, im Gegenteil, sehr verschieden in Form und [...] darunter welche sehr reich in Arbeit; auf jeden Fall wird eine Quaste unter der Waffe besser aussehen. Die Quasten der Hellebarden zur Zeit Louis XIV waren ziemlich groß. Mit freundlichem Gruß zutiefst Hochachtunsvoll, Ihr ergebener Perron."

(3 August 1882, Letter from Perron to Dollmann: „[...] Finally, I can inform you that the two halberds are finished. [...] 300 frs. and expenses 76 frs. for the halberds – Versailles. Brother Philipp will have sent you the necessary information regarding the shafts. As mentioned, they are quite simple [...] The decorated shafts covered with cloth or velvet and tassels [...illegible...] are used inside the chambers or during grand festivities. The weapons themselves had no fixed form; on the contrary, very varied in shape and [...] some very richly worked; in any case, a tassel under the weapon will look better.
